Impractical Applications, Week 4–Inapplicable

Published by ravyn at 12:02 am under Uncategorized Edit This

And again, the storyline does not fit with the application. Nor with being written about, unfortunately; while I’ve finally created a mystery storyline that works for my players, I can’t write about that yet because they’re still solving it. (Behold the power of PCs: They get in the way of things that aren’t even in-game!)

So instead, I’ll point your attention upward. Those of you who have been here before may have noticed that this site has gotten a bit of a makeover, in the form of a new headline banner, and are probably wondering what the story is with the bat and the funny background.

There are two parts to this. First is the image. Due to its delicate position between the beasts and the birds in many forms of folklore and its tendency to come out at sunset, the bat is a symbol of liminality, or betweenness, a guide between worlds. As my goal is to meld the world of the writer and that of the habitual gamer, then blend these worlds of the imagination with something approximating the real world, it seemed appropriate for my little gatekeeper-mascot to be a bat as well, and what better time than sunset?

The medium itself is meant to mirror this feeling, with the contrast between the bat gatekeeper, in its almost completely realistic colored pencil, and the background, with its inked word-art.

Welcome to the Exchange. Dart between the worlds. Happy reading!

Did you do the artwork in the header? I noticed the change right away (sorry I haven’t visited in a few weeks…busy)…

You really do put thought behind what you do…and I appreciate that! That’s why I’ll keep coming back!

Yeah, the art’s my own work. Hadn’t gotten to play with word-art in ages.

    Thanks.
