Impractical Applications, Week 34
Looking back on this week, I realize there’s not much I can do to tie the week’s posts into tonight’s session. And I could do something themed for Valentine’s/Singles’ Awareness Day, but honestly, I did that yesterday and the last couple weeks, and I’ve never been fond of the holiday anyway. But that’s all right. I can just talk about tonight’s session itself.
I finally resolved the conversations with that NPC I’d had thrown into my path at the last minute two weeks ago. It was tricky, since the group was asking him for favors and it was hard to come up with a price. But I found something. Something important to him, and yet decently innocuous. It made the players really, really paranoid. I like that in a favor.
I got to play a little with intercharacter dynamics. Granted, they were mostly dynamics between a pair of NPCs, one of whom may not be in plot much longer, but it was fun. Half the fun was seeing how much subtext I could squeeze into it—a question that would not have been asked except under that particular set of circumstances, the response…. it will be interesting seeing how closely it ends up being read.
And as always, the group may or may not be going in a direction I’m not sure I was expecting, out to face something overwhelming. This should be a challenge to run. So I cut off plot advancement early tonight (not as necessary as it could have been, given how long they spent arguing over whether the chosen strategy was the right one), and cut the post short, so I’d have plenty of time to plan things out based on whatever conclusion they end up coming to.
It will be epic. I haven’t done epic in a while, not from the GM’s side. It’ll be fun to see if I’ve still got it.
This week, I will have fun with my design.
